Deeds of 19 & 20 Frederick Street Brighton 1826-88

Transcript of document at the East Sussex Record Office, Lewes, East Sussex, England.

This property was formerly part of two four-paul units. On 28th October 1826 a lease of seventy six and a quarter years less ten days (from 24th June 1826) was granted by John Martin (gentleman) and Henry Martin (saddle maker) of Brighton to James Martin (carpenter) at a rental of £35 per annum: the buildings were then numbered 46 & 47 Frederick Street.

In June 1829, James Martin leased the property to Benjamin Martin (carpenter) of Brighton at a yearly rate of £8.8.0d.

In June 1834, Benjamin Martin (now described as a builder) assigned the lease to William Carden (cabinet maker) of Brighton for £149.

Following mortgages by William Carden and then by his widow Louisa, the properties were sold, subject to the terms of the lease and the mortgages, to Joseph Henry Redman (dentist) of Brighton in April 1888.

[Joseph Henry Redman (II - dentist) was William & Louisa Carden's son in law. It is also interesting to note, from a Birth Certificate, that Joseph's parents Joseph Henry Redman (I - Fruiterer) and his wife Ann (née Carden) were living at 20 Frederick Street in 1845; Ann Carden being William Carden's neice].
