Whether this particular Joseph (son of Mary) Redman is the father of the four children below is not certain; although in the context of genealogical probabilities he is a strong, if not the only, contender. The four children were all baptised at St Nicholas, Brighton; an unusual fact being that the eldest child James was baptised in 1801 with the Church Register noting that he was born in 1786 - possibly he was born on the Isle of Wight before the whole family moved to Brighton. Family folk lore certainly has it that the Redmans originated in Yorkshire before moving to the Isle of Wight and then Brighton and some of the post-1837 births, marriages and deaths took place on the Isle of Wight. Fairly extensive (albeit not exhaustive) searches in three Record Offices (East Sussex, West Sussex and Isle of Wight) failed to turn up any other suitable Joseph Redman; although "the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence".
