He lived at "Stonewold", Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal, a beautiful house since submerged in the Ballyshannon Hydroelectric Scheme. Educated at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), gaining BA in 1852 and MA in 1869. He was Professor of Engineering at TCD from 1882-1887, having earlier been Professor of Road & Railway Engineering in the University at Montreal (M'Gill College). He was a JP for County Donegal and High Sheriff of that county in 1894. He is the author of the family history The Crawfords of Donegal first published in 1886, with a second edition in 1897.
